I saw an Accord consumer posting on the Internet, saying that he saw a car side blind zone imaging system on the configuration sheet when he bought the car, thinking that he wanted a blind spot monitoring system with an alarm light on the rearview mirror to alert the driver, but after purchasing the car and using it, he found that it was not so, and wanted to add a blind zone monitoring system, which is very embarrassing.

Indeed, in the wave of continuous development of intelligent driving, more and more intelligent driving subsystems configured to the car, not to mention the average consumer can all figure out the function and role of these intelligent driving subsystems, is an intelligent driving engineer, may not be able to fully understand.

The actual system is a lot more than just a lane change, but there are different kinds of system names such as blind spot monitoring system, lane change assist system, lane assist system, lane shift system and car side blind spot imaging system. If you just look at the names, you’ll be totally confused, and you won’t be able to tell which name is the function you want.

 

I will first classify the systems used in lane changing, and then explain the basic functions by category, so that you can better understand and choose the system you want. Based on whether the system has an alarm sound, the lane change intelligent driving system is divided into two categories, as shown in the figure below.

 

  1. Side Blind Zone Imaging System

Side blind zone imaging system uses a camera installed in a designated location on the vehicle to capture the surrounding environment of the vehicle that the driver cannot see, and automatically displays it on the center control screen when the trigger condition (usually turn signal on) is reached.

  1. Blind zone monitoring system (lane assist system), lane change assist system

Before introducing the system, first popularize the GB 15084-2013 motor vehicle indirect vision device performance and installation requirements on the field of view of the rearview mirror requirements: the shaded part of the figure is the rearview mirror need to see the field of view.

For the standard text requirements, here will not do too much interpretation, I will combine the size of the passenger car to reconstruct this figure. The general passenger car length is 4.5-5.0 meters, minus the driver’s 2.25-2.5 meters from the rear of the vehicle, the starting position of the rearview mirror’s field of view is about 1.5-1.75 meters from the rear of the vehicle, as shown in the schematic below.

As you can see, outside the field of view of the rearview mirror, there is a large part of the driver’s view of the blind area, combined with the ISO 17387 standard, the area of the rear side of the vehicle is divided into two areas: blind area monitoring and lane change assistance. This also gives the difference between blind spot monitoring systems and lane change assist systems.

Blind spot monitoring system: monitor whether there is an obstacle vehicle in the 3m*5.5m area behind the left and right sides of the vehicle. When there is an obstacle vehicle, the blind spot monitoring warning light issues an alarm, at which time the driver cannot execute the steering action.

Lane change assist system: monitor whether there is a potentially dangerous vehicle in the area of 3*30m behind the blind area of the vehicle, calculate the collision time by the relative speed of the vehicle in the lane change assist area and the self-car, and warn the driver whether there is danger when turning based on the collision time.

For the parallel assist system, it is the alias of blind zone monitoring system, and the function is exactly the same as the blind zone monitoring system, so I won’t introduce it too much.

  1. Lane Departure System

The lane departure system uses a camera mounted on the windshield of the vehicle’s interior mirror to identify lane line information. In the event that the driver unconsciously (without turn signal) deviates from the lane, the system will sound a beeping alarm and display on the instrument which side of the lane line the vehicle is drifting toward.
